Abstract
Balzac mentions just a few facts and protagonists of the French Revolution but rather this is behind the scenes of his Human Comedy. The society described by Balzac (First Empire, Consulate, Restoration) has its origins in the Revolution. It is characterized by financial speculation and transmission of privileges from one class to another due to the enrichment of certain subjects through the sale of national properties confiscated from clergy and expatriate nobility. The Revolution is responsible for the médiocratie, the domain of the mediocre bourgeoisie committed to defending its own interests. So, Justice betrays revolutionary principles, becoming a tool for political control.
