Abstract
Vincent Placoly is a Martinican writer, politician and playwright of the 20th Century. He always defended the working class against the bourgeoisie, which he considered as neocolonialist and responsible for the poorness of Martinican citizens in the Seventies. In his pamphlet Portrait of a dictator (1974) Placoly and his friends of the Groupe Révolution Socialiste (GRS) stand against the political actions of the mayor of Le Marigot, Michel Renard, sketched as a violent and unfair man, but tolerated by the government which chose this mayor against Aimé Césaire for the deputies elections in 1978. What it is more significant is that the government is accused of maintaining the working class in humble conditions in order to avoid arguments and syndicalist revendications. This text thus reflects on the fights of the year 1974 and, from a broader perspective, the fights which have taken place since the departmentalization.
