Abstract
Passing through the Balzacian analysis of french society and the denunciation of the moral depravity of modern times, this essay tries to come to terms with the complex relationship between the ‘Balzac sociologist’ and the ‘Balzac political thinker’. And, by this way, it aims to decipher the most authentic sense of his alleged monarchical legitimism, which, feeding on a strong anti-modernist feeling, seems to be the manifestation of a deep discomfort towards bourgeois political institutions.
