Abstract
Tocqueville viewed Russia as an important case study of despotism, where absolute power is exerted over a subjugated populace. He also interpreted the dynamics of Russian power through a democratic lens, seeing them as a reflection of social impulses from the lower classes. This concept greatly influenced his reflections on global dynamics and power structures. By examining under this perspective Tocqueville’s references to Russia in his writings, we can see how he developed the idea of a common European space as a response to the threat posed by the Russian empire.
