Abstract
We republish Vittore Collina’s essay that first appeared as an introduction to the volume Inventiva e invettiva nell’Ottocento francese. I pamphlets di Courier, About, Veuillot e Lafargue (edited by V. Collina and G. Rovai, Milan, Mimesis, 1997). The essay first of all focuses on the characteristics of the pamphlet: brevity, aggressive spirit, satirical criticism, ductility, being against someone or something; secondly, it briefly reconstructs the history of this literary genre, which from its beginnings in the age of Gutenberg gradually acquires its own autonomous dimension in the historical phases of major political-ideological clashes, from the Protestant Reformation to the wars of religion at the end of the 16th century, from the English Revolutions of the 17th century to the American and French Revolutions, to finally find its full realization in the French 19th century.
